A week (or so) ago, I was told we’d be able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in Oslo. I was completely stoked because it really doesn’t happen that often in Oslo, which is not “north” enough. I Whatsapp-ed the rest of the BI-mbos and we headed over to the beautiful lake behind our place, Sogsnvann, for some lights, camera and action.
Oh and my neighbour from China came along as well! I asked her along while we were having dinner together before that.
By the time we reached at around 10+pm (lights supposed to be out from 10pm-3am) there were TONNES of other people at the lake. Most probably trying to catch the lights too. It was freezing cold, but I was prepared with my North Face Jacket because I needed to get some pictures.
The sky was beautiful that night, no light pollution (very rare in Oslo lol…), and just pitch black with some others having a campfire not too far away.
Cranked my camera settings a little and caught the photos you’ll see in this post.
It was absolutely magical.
Every photo took about a minute to process, because, yeah… Pitch black! But it was worth all the effort when I started processing them somemore in Lightroom. I couldn’t wait to start on editing this series of pictures. I’d say they’re not bad myself!
So we waited and waited till it was about 12midnight… Still no lights. And it got colder as we started just standing there and talking with one another. Not much movement of any sort…. So Vicky and I decided to start a new range of pictures…
DRAWING WITH OUR HANDPHONES!!!!!
A poor rendition of my name which I find so difficult to write in reverse. I have no talent in this. You will see below the stark difference between my “light drawings” and Vicky’s. Haha.
I had this wicked idea of drawing “Patronus-es”, like in Harry Potter, and my patronus was the most easy drawing which I could think of… A butterfly. Although, I even failed at drawing the most simplest of animals as you can see above.
Vicky on the other hand, evidently has more talent, as she drew out a camel-cum-horse patronus which is so pretty!!!!! Like yeah, it’s not a stag or a doe, but at least it looks like a freakin’ animal!!
GURLLLLL you have talent!!!!
And as though she wasn’t showing off enough, she drew a freakin’ BALLERINA doing a jump. Oh god I need to run away and hide my mutated butterfly NOW. HAHAHA…..
We waited till about 1am till we decided to go back. Before that I invited my PRC neighbour to join us in drawing these heart shapes (Vicky’s obviously on the far right LOL). It was a fun night.
Although, the Northern Lights were STUNNING that night, and we eventually missed them. I caught a glimpse of the lights on Instagram the morning by checking the Sognsvann location. Darn it!!!
They came out at around 3AM and it was in the most perfect hues of purple and green right above the lake.
Ah…. Kinda wish we stayed. But oh well, after waiting for 3 hours, sleep and a comfy duvet was our priority in the freezing cold. The pictures I got of the stars made it a trip worthwhile too.
I can’t wait for more adventures in Norway/Scandinavia where I’ll be able to capture more pictures of the stars in their full glory. Hopefully I’ll get better as this too!! I’m starting to really like stargazing. If only I could do this everyday in Singapore.
